Volante
Strings was formed in 1999 by Megan Webb and the late
Angela Richey. The name Volante means 'fast and light' and comes
from the Italian word for flying. It is used to describe a particular
style of bowing, but the orchestra has also flown in other ways
- there have been four concert tours to Greece and more recently
to Ostend and Bruges. The ensemble generally plays in chamber style
without a conductor and their programmes encompass a varied and
challenging range of music. As well as Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto
in A minor, featuring well-loved local pianist Janine
Smith, they will perform works by Avison, Grieg,
Delius and Vivaldi.
